Preparation Method :

  • The Tempering: Put the oil in a wok over medium heat. When the oil is hot add the tempering ingredients, fry over medium heat. Fry till the cumin seeds turn brown.
  • Add the onions, tomatoes and garlic and sauté till onions are translucent.
  • Mix in the turmeric powder. Then add in the crabs and stir-fry for 1 -2 minutes.
  • Mix in the ground spice powder with tamarind paste and tomato sauce. Adjust seasoning with salt. Add 1 cup of warm water and cook for a few minutes, till the sauce is thick.



  • 500 grams small soft-shelled crabs, washed, cleaned and cut  
  • 30 grams finely chopped onions
  • 90 grams tomato sauce or pureed tomato
  • 30 grams chopped tomatoes
  • 6 garlic cloves, halved
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon tamarind paste
  • Spice powder, Blend to a Fine Consistency
  • Dried red chilies, to taste
  • 2 tablespoon shredded desiccated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds


  • 50 ml Cooking oil
  • Few curry leaves
  • ½ teaspoon fennel seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
