Preparation Method :

  • Grind the dhal with rice and a cup of water to a coarse consistency, set aside.
  • The Tempering: Put the oil in a skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot but not smoking, add the remaining tempering ingredients.
  • Fry until mustard seeds splutter and urad dhal is golden.
  • Add the coarsely ground rice and dhal mix to the skillet and stir.
  • Add 1½ cups of water, adjust seasoning with salt. Cover and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until tender.
  • Stir in ghee and coconut. Serve hot with Sāmbhar and chutney.


  • 150 grams extra long-grained rice, rinsed, soaked and drained
  • 30 grams thoor dhal, rinsed, soaked and drained
  • 2 teaspoon ghee
  • 30 grams grated fresh coconut
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, rinsed, soaked and drained
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, rinsed, soaked and drained
  • 4 dried red chilies, rinsed, soaked and drained
  • Salt, to taste


  • 2 tablespoon Cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dhal
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 dried red chilies
