TARKA DHAL

Preparation Method :

  • Cook the split lentils in the water with the ginger ,garlic, turmeric and green chillies, until soft.
  • Mash the mixture until it has the consistency of a creamy soup.Add some water if the mixture looks dry. Season with the salt.
  • Tarka Preparation : Heat the oil in a heavy pan and fry the onion with the mustard, onion seeds, dried red chillies and tomato for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Transfer the mashed lentils into a serving dish and pour the tarka over.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander, green chillies and mint. Serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS

  • 125 grams masoor dhal (red split lentils) 
  • 50 grams mung dhal (yellow split peas)
  • 600 ml water 
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh root ginger
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic 
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 2 fresh green chillies, chopped 
  • Salt to taste

For the tarka

  • 50 ml Cooking oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • ΒΌ teaspoon mixed mustard and onion seeds
  • 5 dried red chillies 
  • 1 tomato, sliced

For the garnish

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander 
  • 2 fresh green chillies, seeded and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
